St. Knud's Church is Gothic in its purest form and one of Denmark's most beautiful churches. St. Knud's church is the third church on this location. In 1086 King Knud was killed in what was then a wooden church. Already in 1101 he was canonized and thus a quite big travertine church was built. In the crypt of the church remains of this travertine church, burning down in 1247, can be seen. But above all the crypt contains King Knud's coffin with his skeletal remains.

Since the early XV century the Copenhagen castle has been gradually turning into the Royal residence. At about 1730 the Cristiansborg castle was built at its previous place. After it was burned down in 1794, the king moved to Amalienborg, that still remains the main residence. However, in the royal wing of the new-built Cristiansborg castle there are located assambly rooms, used as a place for ceremonial banquets, royal receptions, annual new-year balls and the Queen’s public audiences.

The St.Olay Church was named after its defender, afterwards canonized norvegian king Oluf the Saint. He was defeated at Stiklested in 1030. His pictures can be seen on old church stamps from 1616, and also in different parts of the church, where he is represented trampling on the serpent of paganism.
