Queen Margrethe II in her youth had dug several clay pipes in London's Hyde Park and carried off to Denmark without permission. The book of graph Jorgen Ahlefeldt-Laurvig «Queen Margrethe and Archaeology» describe this episode. In memories he tells how in 1960th he and the future queen climbed over the fence in London to admire the flower bed of roses. There they found buried pile of clay pipes, probably from the 15th century. It is not clear from the book, whether at present these tubes at the National Museum of Copenhagen. Graf confirmed to the «Berlingske Tidende» that they did not have permission to export found objects from the UK. But he however added, that in climbing back over the fence Margrethe threw her hat forward and said: "Jorgen, do me a favor, give me my hat." Ahlefeldt-Laurvig don't believe that an act is reprehensible. "If it were some rarities, which could be regarded as a national cultural asset, then, of course, it would be quite another matter," - he said. "It was just a pile of old clay pipes, and the discovery is nothing special," - said the Director of the Danish museums Nils Jensen. He said that the queen had nothing to be ashamed of, on the contrary - the episode confirms that in her youth she was a passionate archeologist. "It always brings joy when you find something of interest and bring them to the museum in his own country" - he added. Journalists of the Berlingske Tidende tried to get clarification on the rules of the export of archaeological finds from the country of the staff of the British Museum, but they refused to comment on the incident. Clay pipes were very common in Europe for centuries, writes the Copenhagen Post. Over time, millions of them were thrown out and buried, so that now such tubes are often found around the various settlements. Original text: "The North Caucasus" / Site SKNews.RU |
