Датские кроны Denmark’s Central Bank has honoured Queen Margrethe’s 70th birthday on 16 April through the issuing of three commemorative coins.

The coins are identical except for their size and colour. The 1,000 kroner piece is gold, has a diameter of 22mm and weighs 8.65 grams. The 500 kroner silver coin has a diameter of 38 mm and weighs 31.1 grams. The 20 kroner coin, of which 1.2 million will be issued, is made of an aluminium bronze alloy and is the same size as a normal 20 kroner piece.

All three have the Queen’s profile on the front side and the royal shield on the back.

The motif on the front of the coins is copied from a portrait of the Queen by sculptor Lis Nogel and the Central Bank said it will be used in the ordinary 10 and 20-kroner coins from 2011.

On the back side of the coins, the royal arms design surrounded by daisies – most probably in honour of Queen Margrethe’s media nickname of ‘Daisy’ – was designed by artist Ronny Andersen.

The coins are available as of today from selected coin dealers and directly from the Royal Danish Mint in the suburb of Brøndby.
