Оперный фестиваль Annual Opera Festival turns Copenhagen into a living concert hall. 27th of July marked the opening act of the city’s Opera Festival, which sees opera step out from its traditional background of concert halls and onto the streets, waterways and metro lines.

For this year’s Opera Festival, organisers said they were determined to use the city’s new and old public spaces to bring the public an art form that they wouldn’t witness in their everyday lives.

The idea was to connect the old traditions of opera with innovative backdrops such as the performance of Don Quixote this Saturday at Blågårdsgade Square in the Nørrebro district.

Usually known for being surrounded by housing projects and drug dealers, the square will be host to "Am I not Don Quixote” – a production that follows three musicians and a director through a dramatic musical staging of Cervantes’ classic tale of Don Quixote de la Mancha.

The six-day Copenhagen Opera Festival runs until 1 August and features international and established local talent.
