Copenhagen Fashion Week 2010

Copenhagen Fashion Week took place from 12 till 15 of Autust 2010 in Denmark. Twice yearly, in February and August, the fashion world descends on Copenhagen to celebrate Nordic fashion. Some 60,000 fashion professionals in the form of buyers, designers and press visit what is northern Europe’s largest fashion week.

The week is not just about fun and frivolity, though, as fashion is Denmark’s fourth largest export, and the week is a rollercoaster PR event for the city as a whole.

Copenhagen plays a central role in serving buyers from northern Europe (Scandinavia, Germany, Benelux) and is the main platform for Scandinavian brands internationally, Peter Fenger Selchau, the CEO of fashion fair CPH Vision, told the Copenhagen Post.

‘We not only see ourselves as a Danish platform, but mainly as a Scandinavian fashion platform. The main challenge for Scandinavian fashion is that is very much alike and lacks the diversity needed to conquer the international market and attract more customers from abroad.’

While he conceded that the financial crisis has affected the fashion industry and that it is generally not performing as it did back in 2007-2008 - a study by Danish Fashion & Textile revealed that Danish fashion houses lost about 20 percent of the home market in 2009, a year in which an estimated 25 percent of Danish brands went out of business - he was confident the attention Copenhagen is experiencing right now will pay off in the near future.
