Last weekend was clouded by the news about the fact of vandalism in Denmark. One of the most significant cultural monuments in Denmark – Jelling complex - was violated. Vandals put graffiti on the big runic stone, church doors, on a number of gravestones and on the wooden box, fixed for the little stone protection during winter time. Careless inscriptions made with green paint cover the big stone from two sites and a little bit from the third. It should be mentioned that the big stone in Jelling was established by Harald Bluetooth in 965 and the little one — by King Gorm approx. in 955. Is it possible to delete graffiti without problem? This question should be answered by experts from the National Museum of Denmark. Chairman of parish council in Jelling Gunni Højvang believes that inscriptions could be purged away without any hurt for the big stone. «It is reported that police has found the can with the same paint. Therefore it is possible to detect the paint type and find needed means for its deletion», — he says in the interview for the DR company. Gunni Højvang hopes that damage is not so serious, as it looks at the first sight. He says: «I’m completely sure that the stone will gain its former look». At the moment police try to detect individual or group of individuals, accessorial to the fact of vandalism in Jelling. Translated by Olga Klisheva |
