The Carnival in Aalborg is going from 22 till 28 of May 2011 in the Northern part of Jutland.Kirsti Thorvaldsen, Ebbe Lauridsen, Kaj Steensgård and Bramwell Flyckt are the founders of the Carnival in Aalborg. In 1983, they organised the first carnival in Aalborg and in this context established the association, 'Carnival in Aalborg'. Bramwell was elected chairman of the assosiation. Bramwell's intention was to celebrate fantasy and the coming of spring through carnival traditions: a transformation of the city into a gigantic theatre with the citizens as actors, the street as the stage and the body as a dancing sculpture. Initially, the Carnival in Aalborg was held in the centre of Aalborg. Due to the lack of safety in midtown and a substantial decrease in revenue, the board decided to move the event to the city park, Kildeparken. The first Carnival parade consisted of 5-10,000 participants. Since 1990, the event has successfully developed into the largest carnival in Northern Europe with up to 25,000 participants in the parade and around 100,000 spectators. The Carnival in Aalborg 2011 offers three major events: the Children's Carnival (22 May), the International Carnival run-up: "Battle of Carnival Bands" (27 May) and of course, the Grand Parade followed by the major Garden Party in Kildeparken (28 May). Starting points and times of the Grand Parade: Haraldslund: start at 11.30am Nørresundby Havn: start at 10.30am Nordkraft: start at 10.30am Borgergade: start at 10.30 Original text, photo: The Official Site of The Carnival in Aalborg |
