Карен БликсенIt is already clear that  the new two-part movie “Tanne” about life of Karen Blixen at the age of 28 and her travel from Italy to Africa, can become the most expensive film project in Denmark’s history.

Regner Grasten is the producer of the project, while it should be directed by Bille August who estimates the movie budget at 65 million Danish krones.

“Bille August told me that for many years Ingmar Bergman had been sad about that 5-hour movie “Fanny and Alexander” had to be shortened down to 3 hours. We have so many materials that we might have the same situation. That’s why we decided to make two movies”, Regner Grasten said in his interview with Jyllands-Posten.

Regner Grasten received financial support from The Danish Film Institute. However, this amount covers only the most cost of the movie. Therefore, in May 2011 Regner Grasten went to Cannes to seek additional financing, as well as held negotiations on potential for collaboration with Zentropa.

Regner Grasten is sure that such a long story about Karen Blixen’s life will be of great interest to the audience.

“Time is on our side. People are ready for big drama, while Danish cinematography got another international boost thanks to Oscar of Susanne Bier. There is nothing that could be not on our side”, he said.

Jyllands-Posten reports that Bille August finds the two full-length movies very promising.

To know Karen Blixen one should know how her parents lived. Her father, Wilhelm Dinesen, was a high-living fiddle who above all else was living with Indians in the USA at that moment. Whereas her mother, Ingeborg Dinesen, was a common and religious woman. They were opposites in many ways, and there was some of both about Karen. We have to tell people about it and that is the reason why we had to enlarge the story”, Bille August said in his interview with Jyllands-Posten.

Filming of the first part of the movie is scheduled for February 2012. The first part will be released in cinemas in autumn 2012. The second part must be released in January or February 2013.
