There are last days of exhibition entitled "Ugly (or beautiful?)» («Grimt (eller smukt)?») in KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg. The exhibition, which was opened for visitors six months ago, is very unusual. It presents the work of contemporary artists, which is cultivated ... ugliness. What motivated the authors to create their works? Why pictures look so primitive and sloppy, sometimes aggressive and rude? Why the main theme of the work is death and blood? Why are these works seem to us so unpleasant and disgusting? Is it not the purpose of real artist to show the ideals and beauty? Why in the early 20th century artists are beginning to go beyond the boundaries of the "decent" and challenge the taboo? The exhibition asks all these questions in front of visitors. The exhibition seeks an answer to the question of why artists since the beginning of the 20th century have found it necessary to test boundaries and to challenge taboos. It also contrasts the ugly with the beautiful and asks whether these concepts are really all that unambiguous. The works on display are partly from KUNSTEN’s own collection and are supplemented with loans from other collections. Concepts of "ugliness" and "beauty" in the 20-21st century are more vague. Why ugly can be beautiful and why beauty can change to ugliness? The answers to all these questions can be found by visiting the exhibition "Ugly (or beautiful?)", which closes November 20, 2011. There are exhibits from other museums as well as KUNSTEN, Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, including art of contemporary Danish artist Michael Kvium, which the Museum has recently acquired.
