Датская литература

Literary editors of the Danish newspaper Berlingske named 10 best non-fiction books in 2011 in Denmark. Among them are the following: “The Limfjord” by H.E. Nørregård-Nielsen (Denmark), “Ghita” by L. Kongsgaard, “Memoirs” by T. Lindgren (Sweden), “Moonwalk with Einstein” by J. Foer (USA), “Hippie I” by P.O. Knudsen (Denmark), “Poul Schlüter. It was not so bad” by K. Strand (Denmark), “Jerusalem” by S.S. Montefiore (UK), “The Man Behind the Hero” by N.Barfoed (Denmark), “Apprenticeship. Life story” by P. Bastian (Denmark), and “The Girl from Auschwitz” by M. Vestergaard (Denmark).

1.“The Limfjord” by Hans EdvardNørregård-Nielsen (Gylendal)
Art and literature mingle with memories, observations of the landscape, and criticism in Nørregård-Nielsen’s large two-volume book “The Limfjord”. The book is illustrated with wonderful photographs made by Kirsten Klein. The Limfjord and the area around it charged the book with such great power which the reader will never forget.

2. “Ghita” by Lea Kongsgaard (Gylendal)
There is nothing particularly special or flattering about Ghita Nørby drawn by Lea Komgsgaard. However, the writer made an exemplary biography of the actress who had a proactive attitude. Ghita Nørby was perfect at what she was doing, and the character sketch of Ghita is absolutely unvarnished.

3. “Memoirs” by Torgny Lindgren (Samleren)
Amazing book of stories and recollections about places where memory and imagination meet, written by one of Scandinavia’s most popular authors. Torgny Lindgren is an excellent narrator whose voice is both happy and sad at the same time.

4. “Moonwalk with Einstein” by Joshua Foer (Hr.Ferdinand)
Memory is a mystery. But having read this funny sensible book on superpowers’ memory it really seems to you that you become wiser. Joshua’s works are informative, interesting, and written in the style of Froer’s brother Jonathan Safran, who is also a writer.

5. “Hippie I” by Peter Øvig Knudsen (Gylendal)

Documentary writer Peter Knudsen, who took part in the first rock music festival in Denmark Thylejren in 1970, brought unique hippie chronicles out of the hashish fog. The chronicles describe the ideal of the subculture and its destruction. He speaks to those who are still ready to listen to him, he refers to written sources and does no try to assuage any doubts.

6. “Poul Schlüter. It was not so bad” by Kurt Strand (People’sPress)
Kurt Strand’s collection of interviews with former Prime Minister Poul Schlüter is a decent book about a decent man. A ballet and music lover full of vitality and exuberance, he was still grateful to his life for everything it made him do and stand.

7. “Jerusalem” by Simon Sebag Montefiore (Sohns Forlag)
If you visit Jerusalem you will never forget it, as well as you will not forget the book “Jerusalem” by British historian Simon Sebag Montefiore. The author uses religious and literary texts in order to combine human foolishness and greatness in his remarkable book about the city.

8.“The Man Behind the Hero” by Niels Barfoed (Gylendal)
Writer Niels Barfoed studies himself through an exceptional overview and the deepest analysis. He does it in the body of his character Knud Rasmussen drawn in a white anorak in the book “The Man Behind the Hero. Knud Rasmussen is nearby.”

9. “Apprenticeship. Life story” by Peter Bastian (Gylendal)
The book is amazingly honest and easy to read. These are memoirs where life reflects the world, and the world reflects life.

10. “The Girl from Auschwitz” by Morten Vestergaard (Gylendal)

Arlette Andersen survived Auschwitz and now one of the last witnesses to the evils of Nazism in the concentration camp. In “The Girl From Auschwitz” she tells her story. Morten Vestergaard put a lot of effort into making the work that convincing and credible. The writer put on paper all the interviews and stories of the French-Danish Jewish woman in a brilliant way.
