Queen’s New Portrait

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is painted again. And again the portrayer is Niels Stroebek.

 

Over a number of years Niels Stroebek has created several out of numerous portraits of the Queen; depicting the Queen as an individual as well as making her official portraits. One of these portraits is in Aarhus City Hall.

 

Niels Stroebek’s new work is also an official portrait. This time the reason is the Queen’s Anniversary. Next week at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Hilleroed, the portrait will be unveiled.

Queen Margrethe II is the most-portrayed Danish monarch. Besides Stroebek who was one of the first portrayers of the Queen, her portraits were also painted by Preben Hornung, Thomas Kluge, Pia Schutzmann, Michael Kvium, Henrik Have, Niels Winkel, Bjoern Noergaard, and many others. Bjoern Noergaard, for example, made portraits of Her Majesty for the tapestry in the banquet hall at Christiansborg Castle. The Royal Family owns fewer portraits of Margrethe II than different state institutions and organizations which have most of the Queen’s pictures.

The exhibition at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle is titled “Regent for 40 Years - Queen Margrethe 1972-2012.”

Along with other pictures from the Museum’s collection, also presented at the exhibition, there will be shown table layout, and gowns of the government ministers and outstanding cultural figures and businessmen. A special exhibition section is organized for children. They will have a chance to make their own crowns and become knights of Frederiksborg.

The exhibition opens 12 January and runs until 22 April 2012.
