Reductions at the Royal Danish Theatre

Staff and positions reductions started at The Royal Danish Theatre. As a cost-saving measure the Royal Theatre plans to eliminate 81 positions, 33 of which are artist jobs.

 

For the last two weeks dismissals reduction has been discussed, according to the plan announced by the Theatre.

“This decision was not easy to make but it was necessary in order to maintain the financial stability of the Theatre. We tried to find an individual approach to each employee who has to leave us. While we also tried to find a balance, to still be an attractive workplace which will help make the Royal Theatre ambitious and strong. To be a national stage which can shape cultural life and continue giving the public strong theatrical impressions”, says the Theatre’s Director Erik Jacobsen in an interview with Danish Berlingske.
 
One third of the reductions will take place after the contracts which will not be extended beyond termination date, have been revised; some employees retire and vacate their positions. Forty two employees have willingly retired for now. Twelve more employees will be affected by cuts.

33 artists will leave the Royal Theatre; they are 16 people from the opera chorus, 2 opera lead singers, 1 conductor, 11 dancers, and 3 actors. The backstage employees will also be affected, 18 stagehands will leave the Theatre. In the Administration Department 31 positions are eliminated, including 5 executive ones.
